Antonio's Pizzaria with Joe Mazzuca

Text from Joe Mazzuca:

"We will go to this place tonight for great pizza. A little more Naples style. Plus the town it's in is sweet.

I made reservations at 9. We can go get an appertivo before and walk around the center of Rimini.  See you guys around 6:30/6:45ish."

We're in Rimini, Italy

Arrived Rimini 4/1 @ 2 PM. 60 degrees and partly cloudy.

Rimini is famous for being a jet set hot spot on the Adriatic. The famous Grand Hotel is still the premier location in season. Right now Rimini is quiet. In about a week things will really start picking up.

We have a small studio designed to make things easy. A huge terrace with extra space helps. Our living area (which is 550') is a bit tight. The design is very clever but ... No more studios.

We have walked about 40 miles of this beautiful ancient resort city dating back before the Romans. The homes are beautiful. The people are friendly and curious to know why American's are visiting since they don't see many. After 10 days, the weather is cooler but the tourists thicker. Heavy on the Italian tourist. Brits, Swiss and Germans will arrive soon. We have done a fair amount of the restaurant scene. So far it falls far short of the fabulous Bologna fare. Maybe that isn't fair because most of the world falls far short of Bologna cuisine.

A good friend of our family, Joe Mazzuca, plays baseball for San Marino which is 20 miles away. Joe was kind enough to invite us to a typical local Italian night out. We ate in Piazza Cavour and had appertivos (think tapas) that come with the beer and wine. Excellent!

From there we headed to Santarcangelo, a small town about 12 miles NW of Rimini, for a truly delicious pizza experience at Antonio's Pizzeria.

We asked Joe to help us negotiate a prescription refill and a shipment of gifts to Chicago
so he once again drove from San Marino to spend time with us getting things done. A big bonus was Joe taking us to lunch at Casina Del Bosco which has the best roast beef sandwich this side of J Alexander's. The Piadina sandwich is wildly popular in Italy now and can be found in dozens of small sandwich shops. It was great to have the very successful eleven year veteran of the Italian League take us to the primo Piadina maker. Don't miss it when in Rimini. We will see Joe again when visiting San Marino in a few days, then again for his home opener the night before we leave.

Rimini has a fabulous Gate to the City which is convenient to the Central Shopping District. There is a Roman Coliseum ruin over 2200 years old. The port is busy and houses a lot of commercial boats as well as a massive fleet of pleasure boats in all the canals and Marina. Not many yachts to speak of as its still in the 60s.

We really like it here. There's great walking for miles along the Adriatic and along the Marina Boardwalk. The area we are in is centrally located so that we can head out in several different directions. Milan, Venice, Ravenna, Bologna, Florence and Ancona are all within 1-2 hours by train or car. Split, Dobrovnik, Radar and Korcula, Croatia are a ferry ride across the Adriatic.

The hotels are very reasonable. A nice 3 or 4 star accommodation with a balcony on the beach will run about $100 per night in high season. The Grand Hotel about $250 -$650. We do love the food.
 It's Italy!

O'Connor overall retirement score is 96.75 Top 15!

We Seem To Be Getting Away From Our 1 Bag Scenario!‏

Taking the train from Bologna to Rimini. Since we left Chicago, we've collected more stuff. Time to downsize again.

Bologna, the Quadrilatero Area

The “Quadrilatero” area has an ancient tradition. It had its greatest development in the Middle Ages and kept its trade vocation throughout the years. The main craft guilds of the city such as goldsmiths, butchers, fishermen, “Salaroli” (workers who salted meat to cure it), the Furriers, Barbers and the Society of Painters, had their headquarters in this area.

Most of the guilds located in the street once called Mercato di Mezzo, today known as via Rizzoli, at the beginning of the 20th century also moved in the heart of the Quadrilatero. Nowadays the Quadrilatero is the historical center area bounded by piazza Maggiore, via Rizzoli, piazza della Mercanzia, via Castiglione, via Farini, piazza Galvani and via dell’Archiginnasio.

Jewelers, butchers, delicatessens, greengrocer’s, bakeries, shops with traditional cuisine and craft activities and other specialized trades are located in these streets. Most of these shops have preserved the historic architecture and furnishing, thus making them genuine artistic treasures.

From the high vaults, leaving behind the elegant piazza Maggiore, the path leads to the narrow and odorous alleys of the old medieval market with the characteristic “holes”. This is the commercial heart of the old town center, overflowing with goods on the stands that are scattered along via Pescherie and via Drapperie, and full of noisy sellers and customers going by.

How to visit the Prado Museum in Madrid

No trip to Madrid is complete without a visit to the Museo del Prado, one of the oldest and finest art collections in the world. Of course, there is an abundance of Spanish art here, but the collection also represents material from around the world.

1 Buying a ticket

Queues for tickets on the door at the Prado can be long. There are three ticket offices, but the Puerto de Goya is the best one to head to as the others often don’t give a full range of discounts for concessions.
If you want to skip the queues and don’t mind paying a few extra euros, you canbook your ticket online in advance of your visit. The extra charge gets you free into some temporary exhibitions, so is often very good value. Be sure not to fold your printed e-ticket as they can get grumpy at the entrances with folded sheets of paper. And keep your ticket with you throughout your visit as the staff have a habit of asking to see it again once you’re inside.
Groups of more than six people must pre-book their tickets. Adult entrance is €9,50 (concessions available) and can be bought at http://www.museodelprado.es/en/ingles/

2 Get a good deal

If you are a bit of an art buff, or even if you’re not, and intend on visiting all three of the art museums on the Paseo del Prado (the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofia National Museum Art Centre) during your visit you’d do well to buy the Paseo del Arte ticket. They don’t advertise it very well – because it’s such great value – but ask for it at any of the ticket offices. All three museums for €14,40.
You can escape the complicated ticket system completely by visiting on one of thefree entry days: October 12 (Columbus Day), 19 November (Anniversary of the Museo Nacional del Prado), December 6 (Spanish National Holiday), May 2 (Official Holiday for the Region of Madrid) or May 18 (International Museum Day). Be warned, the Museum is very busy on these days.
Also, if you’re seeking good value, don’t forget that a regular ticket to the Prado also gets you free into the Cason del Buen Retiro, nearby. It’s where much of the Spanish art from the 1800s is displayed.

3 Choose your entrance

Getting into the Prado can be bit of a nightmare and the queues are often very long. There are three entrances:
Pueroto de Velasquez – the main entrance to the Museum
Puerta de los Jerónimos – enter here if you have tickets for temporary exhibitions.
Puerto de Murillo – officially for pre-booked groups only, but if you have individual tickets and smile nicely they’ll often let you in here as well. It’s worth it as it has much shorter queues. This entrance points you in the direction of the classical sculpture galleries and the Italian renaissance.
If you intend to bring a disabled vehicle to the Museum, they prefer it if you call in advance and let them know (+34) 91 330 2800

4 Get your bearings

This Museum is enormous. It’s well worth picking up a free paper map when you arrive. They are available at all the main entrances. All the rooms are numbered from 1 to 102. The rooms are all numbered in Roman numerals. You’d do well to swot up on your I, V, X, L and C.

5 A quick tour

There are many guidebooks to the Museum, available for sale in the two shops (upper and lower floors). The Prado have created a leaflet called the Quick Visit Guide – a selection of art objects to visit if you want to do the highlights of the Museum in a hurry. Alternatively, take an audio tour of the collection for €3,50.
If you don’t want to pay for the leaflet, there is a tour of the top 15 masterpieces in the Museum available on their website, which you can look at in advance: http://www.museodelprado.es/en/en/welcome/15-masterpieces/

6 Expert knowledge

If you want more information about the major artists represented in the Museum and their works, you can buy inexpensive booklets in the main rooms dedicated to Valazquez, Goya, Titian, El Greco and Bosch.

7 Avoid the rush

In the summer, especially, the Museum can become awash with tour groups who get in the way of the art and block the passageways. Remember though that these groups are often on a tight schedule. If an organised group is blocking your view of an art work, just hang back a few moments and they’ll soon be out of the way.
In general, the Museum is busiest between 10h00 and 12h00 daily. Remember, everything happens much later in Spain, including museum opening times. The building is open until 20h00, so my advice would be to leave the queues to die down and head there in the late afternoon/early evening.

8 Watch art in action in the galleries

The Prado Museum is proud of the fact that it allows access to its collection to art students and professional painters, giving them the chance to copy the art on display. You’ll see people in the galleries painting their own copies of the masterpieces and perfecting their own techniques. This activity is carefully monitored by the Museum though, so don’t bring your easel and paint along unless you have permission. Some of their work is amazing and it’s quite fun to watch them, deep in concentration.

9 A bite to eat

The cafeteria is located on the lower ground floor and is open until 19h30. It gets really busy at lunchtimes, but at other times can be a great way to sit and relax if you’ve taken in too much art.

10 Check out the bling

It’s almost a crime to make a trip to the Prado and not visit the underground vault containing the collection of jewels that belonged to the Grand Dauphin Louis, son of Louis XIV and father of Felipe V (the first Bourbon king of Spain). The collection comprises all manner of bejewelled extravaganzas finely decorated in rubies, diamonds, emeralds and other precious stones. It’s a feast for the eyes.
The Museum del Prado is open 1000-20h00 Tuesday-Sunday and public holidays. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing and the galleries are cleared 10 minutes before closing time.

WEATHER RELATED CANCELLATIONS
If we need to cancel an excursion due to weather you will not be charged. All determinations about weather cancellations are made by our captain. We watch the weather on an hourly basis, and in the tropics the weather is often locally specific. The weather in San Juan is often different than on the east coast and islands, so please do not make the mistake of deciding not to arrive to your excursion because you think the weather might not be acceptable, as you will be charged as a no-show if the excursion goes out.
If we need to cancel an excursion due to weather or sea conditions we will call to notify you as soon as possible, however please note that due to the sometimes unpredictable weather in the Caribbean, on rare occasions cancellations may be done the same day.
If you have a question about the weather conditions feel free to contact us at (787) 860-3434 or (787) 409-2485.
Credit card charges: Charges will be listed on your statement as "East Island PR". (For some cards, the charge may show as just "STRIPE" while it is clearing.)
